Witham Hub’s Youth Group Scoops Mayor’s Environmental Award

The Witham Hub Youth Group are the winners of the Witham Mayor’s prestigious Environment Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to sustainability and community support through their many innovative projects throughout the year. A particular highlight was their transformation of empty crisp packets into foil blankets for the homeless.

Their Crisp Packet Project not only addressed the pressing issue of homelessness in the Witham community but also creatively repurposed materials that would otherwise have become waste requiring disposal  in landfill.

The Youth Group is an integral part of the Grove Centre based charity, The Witham Hub.  Leyla Ringer, Tyler Clark and Kelsey Ansell, represented the ten strong Group (aged 10-17) at a special presentation ceremony held on 4th May at the Witham Rugby Club. The outgoing Mayor of Witham, Cllr Lucy Barlow presented them with their award certificate and paid tribute to their outstanding efforts.

In addition to the Crisp Packet Project, the Witham Hub Youth Group demonstrated creativity and teamwork through their participation in community events. Their carnival float won both the Best Float and Most Original Idea categories last summer and showcased their ability to inspire and engage the community in discussions about recycling and sustainability. The float not only entertained but it also educated attendees about the importance of reusing materials, making sustainability a fun and integral part of community celebrations.

They also organised community litter picks, in conjunction with the Forest Road Estate Residents Association, making a tangible difference to the local environment. These initiatives not only beautified public spaces but also instilled a sense of pride and ownership among local residents.

Tina Townsend, Founder and Chair of the Witham Hub said: “We could not be more proud of our Youth Group and their indefatigable efforts throughout the year.  They have shown endless enthusiasm, initiative, leadership and community spirit in the many projects they have taken on.  They are a credit to both The Hub and our local community.”
